My name is Earl Pretty. I am one of the owners of Powerhouse Gym Performance and Recovery at Garden City Shopping Centre. We have currently been open for 6 months. We cater for everyone, from world-class athletes, bodybuilders, and football players right through to grandparents.
Having one of the biggest and best gym facilities in Australia, we also wanted to add the recovery side under one roof.
Powerhouse is known for its amazing gym floor and equipment. The recovery is something new to us. After reaching out to multiple companies, we got the same kind of answers. Not many companies have done a full set-up — especially a cold plunge the size that we have. We got promised water temps to be as low as 6°C. After the build and running the pools for a number of months, we soon realised that the pump could only get the water down to about 13–14°C. Unfortunately, this just was not cold enough. Then, speaking to the supplier, they were not overly helpful.
Needing to find answers, I started the Google search. Not really finding anything that made me feel confident in reaching out and ending up with a similar product and problem from another company. Then, by chance, I came across a very informative and straightforward post on Instagram — James from Bergs. The information was exactly what we were experiencing and how they have a product that they absolutely stand by. James spoke about the same issues we were going through. To my surprise, so many other recovery facilities were having the same issues as us. James spoke about their product and how it’s been tested especially for the Australian climate and how they guarantee they will meet every expectation.
James was genuine, straightforward, and I could tell he had a passion and drive to get the information out to others — not just to sell a product, but to help people understand what a chiller needs to do. That prompted me to check out more of his posts, and before long I made my first phone call to James. He was so accommodating and helpful. The customer service just from this phone call was beyond any I had experienced in Australia for many, many years — this was very welcoming.
From there, James kept in contact via phone calls, text messages, and emails, giving me updates and the information I required. We decided to set up a meeting where he could come and have a look at our system. James explained that what we had done was amazing, but unfortunately not enough. People know the difference between heat pumps and chillers, and we had just fallen into the same trap as many others.
James came up with a plan moving forward to remove our existing heat pump and replace it with a Bergs chiller. This whole process was spoken and explained to us in great detail. One of the most important things — there was no pressure or pushy sales tactics whatsoever.
Since the install, which James himself was present for to oversee and liaise between trades and myself, the day went very smoothly. During the first week after the chiller was installed, we had technicians and James himself coming out and checking and reading data daily. Set points and water flow were adjusted, and within a week our cold pools had gone from 14°C down to 5.5°C and were holding temperature with ease.
Members at our facility have been asking and commenting on how amazing the cold pools are now and that it’s actually a challenge for them. Having the cold plunges set at a lower temperature helps with the recovery side and effects, and now we can provide exactly what we promised. The members and myself are ecstatic, and the knowledge I have learnt through this process with the help of James has been incredible. Every day, members are coming to me and telling me their experiences trying to beat their own time in the cold plunge. Before the install, members were just relaxing in the cool pools and it wasn’t much of a challenge or recovery for them.
I’ve worked with a lot of trades and companies in many aspects, and I found Bergs Chillers to be exceptional.
